Air Attack aught not to work - it’s a top-down shooter from a brand new studio, and it’s all done in 3D polygons. An impressive technical feat, to be sure, but it’s also a rather good game deep down, too. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from Air Attack and it’s the sort of the game that, if you’ll forgive the pun, normally flies under my radar – however, I wanted to give it a shot and I’ll really glad I did.
It’s all based on a standard formula – we’ve been playing shoot-em-ups for decades – but due to a clever mix of controls (the plane maps 1:1 to your finger, hovering just above, meaning you can drag to move it or tap and it jumps to where you want it) and a smart difficulty curve, Air Attack manages to stand tall amongst similar games on the App Store by virtue of it’s own sense of identity and individuality.
And some gorgeous graphics set it apart even further – running beautifully on an iPhone 4, Air Attack’s gliding visuals are both distinctive and solid; bullets are easily distinguished against the background and the sense of depth given by the 3D graphics means that bombing runs are a doddle. Special effects abound, too, with splashes, explosions and destructable buildings all helping to build up the atmosphere.
The game’s generous with checkpoints, too, and the mid-level shops create a safety point where you can boost your plane’s weaponry and buy all kinds of add-ons to help you through the levels. The game boasts 8 complete levels (each with their own massive boss) and each has it’s own style and setting, which is fantastic given the bargain price of the game – just 59p. Indeed, there’s even a free ‘lite’ demo version too.
All of which means that Air Attack is a great shooter. It’s not perfect (it’s not always easy to tell when you’ve been shot) and there’s no online leaderboards, but such things can easily be patched in later if the developers get some love. So why not give this one a shot?
